Re: Blue-Green Algae

Myacin (I or II) should work against Blue/green algae. Some people suggest
using 1/2 the suggested dosage it gives for fish illness, but I would do it
closer to 2/3 or 3/4 the dosage. You want to completely irradicate it, and
not finishing the job will only increase the chance of the plume developing
an immunity to the myacin.

Blue/green algae is actually bacterial in nature (its technical name is
cyanobacteria), and can be treated with antibiotics (like Myacin). It's got
a darker color than most algae along with a bluish tint. It tends to
blanket the tank in slimy "coat" that can be easily rubbed off, but grows
back fast. Myacin and other antibiotics will not harm plants or fish, but
there are several reasons to be cautious.

In treating blue/green algae, one needs to be a bit careful about their
biological filter. Many will tell you the antibiotics will hurt your "good"
bacteria. Why? Because most antiobiotics kill ALL bacteria, "good" or
"bad." I, however, think it's just as likely that all the blue/green algae
that dies very quickly under antibiotic treatment creates a huge nitrate
load that hurts the biological filter by simply overloading it with dead
blue/green algae gook. If you do have have blue/green algae, it's a good
idea to scrape as much off as you can while it's alive before treating with
antibiotics, as this reduces the amount of waste your filter will need to
process in the longrun.

Then again, you might not have blue/green algae at all! If you do, a good
antibiotic treatment should last about 8-10 days and will eliminate pretty
thoroughly.
