Re: real Australian scene

Someone please correct me if my perceptions are in error.

The killy situation down under (NZ and OZ) apparently has come under the
cloud of non-native introductions that have been so devastating to certain
ecological niches. [As Andrew Broome has pointed out, they have to protect
their "native" NZ trout. :-)]

It takes a lot of money to meet the import requirements, but the hobby is
too small and limited to afford the costs. Like killies, everywhere, it just
isn't commercial. Bureaucratic pseudo-scientists can easily import and
distribute nasty predators like damnbusia, at taxpayer expense, while
hobbyists have to endure long quarantines and endless red tape or become
smugglers.

Could we, at this end, make some arrangement to maintain killies in a
condition that the bureaucracy would accept, and then send them on to OZ
(and NZ)? Can they send us fish, easily?

The situation of limited species, and exclusivity would vanish, if we could
share our wonderful variety of killifish species in some rational fashion.
[The recent debate smacks of a perilously underpopulated hobby.]

I, personally, like Blue-Eyes, Gudgeons, and a lot of the ANGFA species. How
can we arrange to swap boxes like we now do with DKG, KFN, etc.? The first
step is to cure our ignorance and let us know what we have to do to send you
*Glugea*-free Nothos, etc.

I'd be happy to be educated, on or off list, if we could break down the
barriers enough that folks in OZ could have as nice fishrooms as we have
here.

Let's do something positive for killies down under. I look forward to the
establishment of a Southern branch of the Lampeye Study Group. (^_^)
