RO water is close to pure water. Fish cannot live in pure water. You must add
something to it. Different amounts of different minerals for different fish.
I use RO water in lieu of rain water (because of the drought) to dilute my
tap water for certain types of fishes that need lower dissolved mineral
content -- such as some South American annual killies and tetras, etc. I
blend half tap water at Total Dissolved Solids of 400 ppm with RO water to
achieve about 200 ppm TDS. Alternately, one can purchase salts to add to RO
water. My local fish store charges $0.50/gallon for RO water. They sell it
primarily to marine fish enthusiasts who add a lot of salts but want a base
zero to add them to. Essentially that is what we want to do as killifish
keepers but we add much less salts than the marine folks. Again, add your tap
water to the RO water unless it is really polluted. So why add tap water back
to your "expensive" RO water -- well as I said, to dilute the tapwater to a
lower TDS or conductivity. If your tap water is low enough to begin with, you
don't need RO water. MY tap water is fine for most killies, but a few require
special low TDS water. Nothos, on the other hand need more salts/minerals
than my tap water provides.
