Re: OT. bettas etc.
Hi all.
Being serious for a change.
I don't really care what people breed, or what they are prepared to pay for
fish which I dislike. I don't mind pink guppies or albino piranhas. I hate
parrot fish and some types of goldfish. Most of all I hate the people who
dye fish with dangerous (to the fish) colours. These are my personal
feelings.
What does concern me, however, is that we have a hobby that is strong. A
hobby where we can help to promote understanding about the remaining wild
places in the world, and an understanding of how to preserve these places
and the animals which inhabit them.
When man tinkers with nature there are 2 possible results. We can strengthen
and preserve or weaken and , ultimately, destroy.
As for crossing species I can see the validity in experimentation. If a
species is weak and crossing with a closely related species can preserve it,
then better modified than extinct.
Although species such as B.splendens, smaragdina, imbellis etc are closely
related I cannot understand the logic behind the experiments "to strengthen
finnage".Surely crossing with wild splendens would be more logical. Having
said this, a failed experiment is as valid as a successful one, in that
there are recorded results.
BTW My comment (previously ) about splendens x bellica is that one is a
mouthbrooder. Not a good idea.
End of soapbox time.
Regards,
Dave Wood
