Denise,
Forgive me pointing this out BUT B.spendens=B.splendens. It does matter what
colour they are, they are the same species.Blue will mate with red or yellow
or whatever.
Gardneri and striatum and australe are different species. That's why they
don't cross breed. Try crossing Betta splendens with betta bellica and you
will get the same same results as trying to cross killies.
