Re: OT. bettas
Hi everyone, I haven't posted on here in A long time.
I've been going through heck here. Being A single dad
trying to raise 4 kids on my own plus taking care of
our Killifish doesn't leave me much time to be very
actively involved in much of anything lately!
This is an interesting subject that understandably
can be very confusing for many of us that are too sane
to go bidding huge sums of money for fish no matter
how beautiful they may be. As mentioned before the
fact that it came from breeder X, who happens to
garner all of the trophies at every show, certainly
drives the price up and makes it more "desirable".
It's also A result of the fact that they are quite
often A relatively new genetic mutation that causes
them to be very rare (especially A show quality
example) and therefore quite desirable and so
ridiculously (in my opinion) expensive.
I have A very close friend that breeds rare color
mutations of the Indian Ringneck Parrot. A plain old
green (wild color) one can be purchased from A breeder
for $20-$50, yet the new and rare colors that my
friend buys and breeds are all over $1,000.00 ea! He
just barely purchased A pair of them that are A very
beautiful (and rather new) color variety for over
$7,500.00! When I told him that I thought he was crazy
to do that he responded by explaining to me that at
least he didn't buy the ones that he really wanted to
get, they were $20,000.00 for the pair!
I'm so glad that we enjoy such A fun hobby and can
usually acquire the varieties of killifish that we
want for just A few dollars A pair, except for the AKA
convention auctions, but we wont go there! ;o)
Just A few late night ravings from A really tired
killifish wacko.
Sean
