Re: AUS question

Hi Kristi, Nevin here in St. Louis. Last summer I collected native Australe's
in Gabon. The water there, as in most parts of the Sub-saharan forest, is
very soft and has a pH of about 6.5 to 7.0. However, african killies are
quite forgiving about water quality within reason. In St. Louis, australe's
do quite well in our water which is reasonably hard at about 300 TDS. I
adjust the pH downward to about pH 8.0 with muriatic acid from Home Depot
(actually muriatic acid is hydrochloric acid). For chlorine and chloramine
removal I use Amquel (from PetsMart). In my opinion, the most important thing
about the water is too change it often, let's say 1/2 every 2 weeks if you
don't have too many fish in the tank. I use 10 gallon tanks. You mention that
you have hard water which is good because hard water typically has good
buffering capacity against changes in pH. Hope you do well with your
australe's. At the upcoming killifish Karnival in South Bend Indiana on Feb.
23 I will be bringing some of my australe's for sale. Maybe, you will be
there. Sincerely, Nevin
