       My guess would be iron. Utilities 'soften' drinking water by taking 
out iron and magnesium among other things, both of which plants require. I 
could never grow plants until I read about someone adding iron to their tanks 
and decided to try it myself. Lo and behold, I can grow plants! Nice plants 
that grow big and strong and quickly. I suspect the catfood has iron and 
other trace elements and vitamins added to it.
       Even though they badmouth my profession in their ads, I will still 
give a plug for Kent Marine's products like super chelated iron and reef 
trace elements.
