Re: does the heater bother fish?

One point to bear in mind is that the "standard " aquarium temp. is a tad
high. Most killies IMHO are happy attempts in the low to mid 70'sF rather
than near 80F which a lot of heaters are pre-set at. If you are worried by
the flashing light may I suggest either using a black waterproof marker pen
to reduce the light, or put the heater in a black mesh guard(same result. )
You could reduce the temp which will reduce the number of times the heater
switches, thus reducing wear on the stat.
Costs: here in UK we have had sub zero temps for a week. My heating costs
are about £1 a day ($1.50) and the fish room is a garden shed 10 feet x 8
feet. I figure that buying heaters for each tank would cost around £1000,
but with average temperatures all year I can run the room with a fan heater
for around £100.A new fan heater costs around £20. (mine cost £2 from a
garage sale.)<BG>
