Nice little piece. Have you considered using mother nature in your set up?
The use of floating or marginal plants is hugely beneficial in an enclosed
flow through system. Ceratopteris (Indian fern) & the humble water cress
(grown as a marginal plant with roots dangling in the water) are about the
best for this purpose. You will need a section of your set up which is
exposed to daylight to be most beneficial.
Removing nitrates is important & these plants suck nitrates like it was
going out of fashion.
