Ouch!  Nicotine can definitely be fatal.  It is a poison after all.  In my 
years of servicing aquariums professionally one common denominator for 
catastrophic fish loss was poisoning.  Cigarette smoking was very common.  
You'ld also be surprised at how many many times cans of beer end up in 
aquariums.  

Wash it well.
