One part bleach to nine parts water left for a period of ten hours will
produce high level disinfection. It is about as close to sterilization as
you can get without an autoclave for home use.
Items to be disinfected must be totally immersed in the solution for the
entire time, If lesser levels of disinfection are desired, the time can be
shortened. However, if you are trying to eliminate a known pathogen from a
tank, I would recommend using the entire time, or even leaving it for 24 full
hours. Remember to also disinfect all contaminated items that might transmit
pathogens to the new setup.
