RE: Spawning over Aragonite
Hi Dave,
I sometimes get well water from my water company, ph is about 8.0 to 8.3. As
the surface water they send me is usually 7.3, I usually drop the pH of the
well water to 7.3 also to keep everything constant. I have had very good sex
ratios with my Nothos at 7.3. Does the aragonite affect the sex ratios? A
friend tried RAC at a pH in the lower 6's and found that he got 199 females
to 1 male. I have no experience going the other way.
Peace,
~RJ~

Hello All
I have been keeping a fine layer of Caribseas finest aragonite sand in the
bottom of my notho tanks. It dissolves to 8.2 and keeps the water nice and
hard. It is very fine but a few shells and larger pieces and mixed in so I
run it through a net to leave only the fines.
RJ~ Sounds like the dessert bowl is a great idea, I'll have to try it.

><{{{>Hi Paul,
><{{{>
><{{{>You can buy black sand at your LFS I believe it is Called
><{{{>Estees marine
><{{{>sand. The best way to explain it is that it is just fine
><{{{>beach sand painted
><{{{>black. It is made in or distributed from New Jersey. Estees
><{{{>marine sand
><{{{>comes in several colors. I chose black as I had heard about
><{{{>the black sand
><{{{>found where Nothos spawned. Would green red or even white
><{{{>work? Who knows.
><{{{>Black works a treat.
><{{{>
><{{{>I discovered the black sand method quite by accident. I had
><{{{>heard about
><{{{>green sand when I started with Nothos and discovered that
><{{{>peat was much of
><{{{>my problem. I had never heard of Jersey Green sand. I found
><{{{>the Estees'
><{{{>product, it came in green. But also in black. I chose black
><{{{>and started
><{{{>spawning the fish. I got lots of eggs. The eggs hatched in
><{{{>record numbers.
><{{{>
><{{{>I started bringing Nothos into my club meetings. I told my
><{{{>friends that I
><{{{>thought that black might work better than green sand. Then
><{{{>they told me
><{{{>that I was using the wrong kind of sand. Oops. The black sand comes
><{{{>pre-washed and ready to use. No rinsing, cleaning or
><{{{>leaching. It costs
><{{{>about $2.50 per bag.
><{{{>
><{{{>By the time I realized I was doing it "all wrong" it was too
><{{{>late. I already
><{{{>had the sand, hundreds of eggs and tanks full of Nothos. I aint gonna
><{{{>change.
><{{{>
><{{{>I have described the method of harvesting the eggs in detail
><{{{>in previous
><{{{>posts. But suffice it to say that the sand sinks faster than
><{{{>eggs. Fill a
><{{{>desert dish half way with the sand. The Nothos will spawn in
><{{{>it. Take the
><{{{>dish out of the water carefully leaving it full of water.
><{{{>Then swirl the
><{{{>sand with your finger. The eggs float out and to the center
><{{{>of the dish.
><{{{>Then siphon or suck them out and put them in peat for storage.
><{{{>
><{{{>
><{{{>Peace,
><{{{>
