Yes, buffering capacity is very NB. Most of us use
bicarbonate to buffer the water. This is, as explained
before in previous posts, a very poor buffer. IT will
buffer the water till all the bicarb is up and then the
pH will crash. The buffering capacity of peat far
outweighs the capacity of the bicarb. Still, I feel peat
is still the best medium to spawn nothos etc... over. I
have experimented with green moss etc... with poor
results.
The irish peat moss the the best. The palm peat fibre I
also use works well to.
To continue the use of peat with my discus dream water
from my tap I add bicarb and Magnesium and calcium
carboante mixes. This stabilizes the water at about 7.
Just my humble opinion--- which is questionable given
the volumes of methylene chloride I work with...
