I hear what you are saying, but with my punctatus I found very little
cannabilism. Other species are certainly very predatory, however. Same
applies to other genera....many Aphyosemions are fairly safe with fry, but
I'd never trust a panchax.

Hi Dave,
I agree that Rivs like lots of cover. But given that, (especially when
plants are used) they will lay their eggs all over the place and you are
unlikely to collect many if any eggs. To make matters worse you wind up with
"wild hatchlings which survive getting eaten. They are agile and fast. You
might not even see them but they will find your eggs or other newborn fry.
My Riv Agilae had not laid eggs all summer. Figured it was the heat. Maybe
it was, but I finally spotted a very young fish hiding in the spawning mop.
So I knew they were spawning. When I pulled out the plants I found some of
the missing eggs in them. I think that Rivs actually prefer water sprite
roots to mops. Just something to keep in mind if your Rivs "stop laying
eggs".
Peace,
~RJ~

I bred Riv punctatus big-time by setting up a 20 gallon tank with lots of
plant cover and (if memory serves) 4 or 5 trios of fish. Water was about 100
ppm Ca and about 75 F. As long as the fish are happy they are easy to breed.
They emphatically do NOT like strong light and bare tanks. Hiding places are
a must. Typically, the more hiding places there are the more you will see
the fish .It gives them a feeling of security.:)

[Katz, Sue] The only thing I can add is that so far, raising my Riv
punctatus fry in pairs (they are really hard to get eggs from) has not
resulted in an even sex ratio. Females predominate.
