Yes, but many killies and other fishes we keep need a higher mineral content. 
I collect the "waste" water and use it for those fish that don't need lower 
TDS water. If you think about it, a reject ratio of about 10/1 only increases 
the salt concentration in the "waste" water by 10%. So my tap water at 260 
ppm winds up at about 290 ppm in the waste stream. Still good for many 
killies. If your tap water is too hard for any fish, then use the waste water 
for watering plants.
