Let me throw in my two cents,
   Here's what I do.  I separate a pair of Norths. for a couple of 
days, and put them together for one hour in a very small container 
with peat.  Over their head I have a light, so they think it is mid 
afternoon.  They usually spawn for the the hour, after that I take 
them out and I have about 60 eggs to dry.  Try it - it works.  Some 
species may have to be taught to do this, but usually I have 
success in this method.
