Re: Prematurely Hatched Australe Frys

I have this problem also, only with orange australe. No other species. I have found that it happens more often when you change the water in the hatching container. I now put water in a hatching container with a half drop of acriflavine and put in about 2 dozen eggs. I don't change any water in the hatching container nor do I put in an airstone. Every few days I will pick up the hatching container and very gently swirl the water. This has pretty much eliminated the problem. I can change water on the fry as much as I want.
When the fry do hatch prematurely, I just leave them in the hatching container and they continue to develop normally. I've seen some develop that didn't even look like fish when they hatched, just a clear ball with a hint of a tail. Maybe if you put acriflavine in the water they will not die even if they hatch prematurely. I use half a drop in 8 ounces of water.
I hope this helps you.
Take care,
Joe in St. Louis (AKA 05414)
