Let me explain what I mean by really interesting. Obviously, all killifish
are interesting. There will be plenty of bivs, aus, gularis, racs and the
like at the sale room (stuff that goes for $15-$25 in the auction) for
reasonable prices. There will be a few things like Riv. xiphidius,
Diapterons, and some not really common stuff (stuff that goes for $25-$50 in
the auction)for fair but affordable prices. Then there will be a pair or
maybe two of jorgenscheeli, magnificus, dolichopterus-the stuff that always
commands prices in the $50 - $100 price range in the auction on sunday. That
is the stuff I am talking about. If you give the first 5 passes to the
people with the most money (auction them) they will no doubt buy all of that
stuff up before there is even a chance for anyone else. Some people will be
discouraged by this. I know when I attended my first convention, it almost
ruined it for me. I was in college and had little money to spend on fish. At
that time there was no fish sale room. It was very discouraging to see that
the only fish I could afford at the auction (for $15-$25 per pair) were the
same fish I could get at my local aquarium society for $3 or $4 per pair.
The addition of the fish sale room to the convention added an opportunity
for those on a stricter budget to acquire some fish they might not otherwise
be able to obtain, and I would hate to see that go the way of Christmas (big
commercialization).
True, someone could increase their chances of winning a raffle for those
first couple of passes by buyng many tickets, but they would still have to
win the drawing. I also expect that a raffle would raise more money anyway,
as everyone in attendance would be buying chances at $1 each or 6 for $5 or
15 for $10?
IMHO
