Oh dear... here we go again... the fat debate.
Mysis, spirulina, white mosquitoe larvae, daphnia,
cyclops etc... have a good
protein:fat:carbohydrate(sugar) ratio.
Algae is the main food in Lk Tang. Everything has its
nutrient base in the algae---mainly spirulina species
and filamentous algae. Everything eats it via the crude
or the processed forms (in fishy tummy).
Because of this the lipid and vitamin content of all the
herbivores and planktinovore mirror the algae diet. For
this reason the best food for Tang. chichlids is
spirulina flakes and/or cyclops.
The care of Tropheus is an extreme case. Give them too
much digestable protein and fat and they blow up like a
balloon. For this reason, blood worm is very bad... L.
tanganicanus will not be so dramtic and will stand some
blood worm. In fact, I got away with feeding my tropheus
blood worm but only because at the same time I fed
spirulina flake and daphnia and I didn't feed the blood
worm all the time.
L. tanganicanus occupies a similiar niche to
Cyprichromis species and the Neolamprologus species. For
these the best food is cyclops and daphnia. As your daph
and cyclops will not have their guts loaded with algae
you will have to suplement with spirulina flake.
Bottom line: more roughage, less rubbish.
Of course this is just my opinion as a Tanganyikan
addict.
