I think JEHMCO has special small sponge filters "made for killie keepers". The home made alternative would be to use a PVC T fitting with sponge inserted into the side arms and a stem fitted to the upright arm. You would put an airline tube in the stem to create the draw. Incidentally, John at JEHMCO also has small pieces of sponge that come from the center of sponge filters. They are cheap and would work well for the home made filter.

Pet Warehouse had the Azoo sponge filters that are very nice size, but have exposed lead in the base, which caused me to return all of mine.
