Re: Sponge filter for fry
I've been making my own for some time - water quality pipe sawed to the
desired length and drilled or hacksawed at the level to be covered by
the sponge. Pop a cap on the bottom (or a silicone plug) and make an
angled hole higher up to fish the airline through. I use car wash
sponges cut to the desired sizes. My smallest filtered containers are
usually 2.5 gallons, and they fit. They also work for larger tanks, and
have been adequate for delicate non-killies like Parosphromenus or
little Bettas, Apistos, Rasbora etc.
I've been using them for a couple of years now.
I have one that lies on its side in a shoebox, and while it's not ideal,
it has worked. It's set up like this:
plug --(pipe and sponge)---I(elbow with a short pipe rising)
