RE: Minimum Tanks
I find Karl's answer interesting and quite definitive. However, in my
experience, I would say that 'it depends' is the best answer. Factors that
would influence the number of tanks that one puts towards a species would
include, among I'm sure some others: 1)Available space 2)Intentions for the
species 3)the keepers' interests (do you want one killie or many different
ones; large ones or small ones).
I have been able to maintain species in the past without having any in my
tanks for several months.
Sharing rearing tanks is always a possibility to save space. Raise an
Epiplatys with an Aphyosemion (always put species together where the females
are easily distinguishable). Of course, make sure they are of similar size
before putting them together. I have never required more than 2 tanks for a
species, but I don't try to raise in bulk either. The most I've ever raised
is about 100 fish at a time. 30-40 is a good number I have found, so I just
stop collecting eggs when I reach that level of fry. 30-40 can sex out in a
20 gallon tank, so you can start to decrease the population in the tank,
allowing the fish room to grow until you get your next breeders.

For annuals 3 tanks 1 breeding & 2 raising For plant spawners 4 tanks 1
breeding & 3 raising because of difference in size . This would be the
minimum per spec.
