RE: Radiation lesson - but to expand on the facts this time
Hi Tyrone,
The first 8 machines are currently on order and being shipped to the
Washington DC area Post Offices.
As someone who worked in the security field many years ago. It was far more
important for our customers that their patrons and employees felt safe than
that they actually were.
The cost difference was substantial. Putting the entire security force at
the front gate during peak hours or shift changes made everyone feel safe.
But it really meant that the entire facility was unprotected! And yet it was
always required by the customers.
The real problem here is to convince people that their mail is safe, not to
actually make it safe. They are vastly different things.
It was just so much easier when the general population still believed in
magic. We could just cast a spell of protection against the anthrax demons
and everyone except the evil people would be safe. And the people who got
sick would deserve what they get and everyone else would be safe.
Best regards,
~RJ~

The X-rays work by exciting electrons to a new energy
level. Not to go too much into particle physics,
electrons orbit the nucleus in distinct "zones" termed
"shells". As the atomic mass increases so do the number
of shells. Just because hydrogen has 1 shell and gold
several doesn't mean gold's electrons occupy a higher
energy state. The states is dependant on which shell the
electron occupies, or to put it simply which of several
orbits the electron assumes around the atom. Certain
orbits make chemical reactions more likely (everything
is chance in chemistry).
By exciting the electrons to a higher energy states
reactions occur very quickly. a good example is hydrogen
peroxide which breaks down into water and an oxygen
radical. The oxygen radicals reacts with any compound
with electrons to share. At a result it would quickly
react with the double bonds between carbon or nitrogen
in fats and DNA. This hydrogen peroxide attack is the
the method which white blood cells employ to kill
bacteria they ingest. This is also the means by which
ionizing radiation works. The g-rays energise the
electrons, more often than not of oxygen, forming free
radicals. These react with almost anything. As a result
you get damage to proteins and lipids and fragmentation
of DNA as well as base mutations.
In one genetics experiment we were supplied with Cobalt
irradiated plant tissue and we had to count and compare
the chromosomes to that of normal plant tissue. They
were very different...

We have to go down the road to the National Accelerator
Centrum--- where alot of cancer treatment is done.
The machinery needed can not simply be moved into the PO
down the road. The mail would have to go the
accelerator. This is all very impractical...

Most wouldn't know the difference between an ion and
free radical...

The facts are that you still stand a hire chance of
dieing from a Salmonella infection than anthrax and this
is still only a fraction of the risk of being hit by a
bus... yet your elected officials (and mine) still won't
invest in better traffic saftey innitiatives (like
having drunk drivers shot).
As I close, I would like to encourage you to step out
side and catch some rays and synthesize some Vit. D in
the sun's UV.
Bye
