Try Purina  cat chow; works like a charm and they seem to thrive on it. You
can make a small indentation in the dirt and put some pieces of the chow in
there and moisten it or you can scatter it around your container.
The latter approach spreads out the worms
and their poop; the culture medium seems to last a little longer.
