Re: shipping
We seem to be at least a year away from instituting any kind of irradiation
of post. It is likely that it will be phased in and not all post offices
will have the equipment. It is also likely that to save money, things will
be exposed just one time (perhaps at the initiating participating post
office). It hasn't been discussed yet, but phasing is likely to consider
costs of all mail vs envelopes and packages, and my guess is that they'll
start only with envelopes, and it may not go beyond that. Further, I'm
cynical and suspect that if we resolve where the anthrax is coming from and
manage to kill bin Laden and his immediate cohorts farily soon, the public
and congress will lose interest and this idea may die on the vine. I think
we have plenty of time to think about alternatives to shipping fish through
the mail. Finally, many businesses will not use the postal service if there
is no way to avoid irradation (photography is one such business), so there
will develop alternatives such as expanded service by USPS or one of the
cheaper carriers. Whatever happens, we'll adapt and the AKA and life will go
on.

the moment. However, if the USPS starts irradiating all mail to destroy
living biological material (not biochemical, as their spokesman said on the
news) the days of shipping fish in the mail are over. Of course, the policy
of irradiating the mail simply means that that avenue of terrorism is
closed, and such people will move onto other approaches. It's called closing
the stable door after the horse has flown. It will be costly and won't
achieve the desired result.

going to be able to distribute fish with the ease we are used to. In my
opinion this will mean that the affiliate clubs will become even more
important than they are at present as they may be able to ship box shipments
airport to airport etc. There are a few other options available. I know that
Bill Gallagher has been looking into these and I hope that he will be able
to comment either here on in a short article in the BNL.
