One thing to remember about most daphnia species is that their reproduction
ecology would definitely fall under the boom and bust category. One of the
tricks is to keep the culture in the beginning of the boom. When you get
towards the end of the boom you get bust! A dense thriving culture is what
we would all like to see but then it is time to harvest a large portion of
the individuals and do a large water change.
Once you have the food issue solved it is time to look at the population and
water quality management. I would think there is something in the water of
a dense colony that gives a cue to start producing resting cysts or if the
water quality is poor they simply die off. If you have a dense culture and
it is harvested but the water is not changed I would think it is in a very
similar condition before harvest.
