Right on, Joe!
We do have a slightly poor record, as hobbyists, of always keeping it
civil and congenial.
BAKA has been a classic case, but quite similar problems have bugged AKA
or other local affiliates at times, over the years. I agree with you
that AKA is more than worth supporting, and it is simply invaluable to
any serious killy hobbyist. I stand ready to punch out any fool who
disagrees. ;-)
Getting us organized so work doesn't all fall on the shoulders of too
few, and honesty and openness are positive values, somehow seems to
elude us. It's about as hard as trying to form a Chromaphyosemion Drill
Team. It might be neat, but we just haven't been able to do it
consistently.
No volunteer group will ever be all things to all members. We should
look to volunteer/hobby groups that have enjoyed long-term success, and
try to emulate the design of their organizational structures and choice
of specific objectives. Whether it is the Red Cross, the US Yacht Racing
Union, or the Boy Scouts, there is obviously a way to do a pretty good
long-haul job of it. [Not that they are entirely without internal
issues! :-)]
The AKC (and local or breed dog clubs), some horse organizations, and
almost all fish clubs seem unusually inept at continuous smooth
operation. They are notorious for dissention, feuds and periodic
collapse. My personal perception is that they have been poorly organized
from the start, and have failed to adopt the highly specific objectives,
processes and methods that all support. They may be no more or less
passionate about their hobby than any Olympic yachting contender or Red
Cross volunteer. They have just failed to accurately analyze human
motivations and likely behaviour and to fold it into their overall
objectives and the detailed design of their organizational structures.
Some day, I do hope the affiliate club members, the AKA members
(unfortunately, almost the same group right now) and isolated killy
keepers will take a look at the situation and restructure in such a way
that we will have an even greater hobby without having to count on new
saints appearing each year to save things (or old saints burning out
after too many years of the SOS). It might even make a few of those
details currently frustrating Big John a bit easier to handle, along the
way. <G>
