A male notho will not drive just any female, and any
female won't just spawn with any male. There is some
mate selection going on intraspeciesly.
Second, where mating in the wild occurs the embryoes
nornmally don't make it. This is built into the
definition of a species (reproductive and/or geografical
isolation). An example is the cross made between ORT and
RAC. The resulting fish while alive were sterile. The
breeding was also forced under unnatural circumstances.
There are inbuilt measures to make sure hybrids don't
make it in the wild, under the circumstances the fish
exist in naturally.

The wide array of male colours and patterns is definetly
a signal...
