It's been more than 25 years since I happened on a clearance sale in the
outdoors department at a K-mart right about this time of the year. They had
a bunch of 3 gallon water containers for people camping (or whatever). They
are still being used.
They were kept from sitting in the sun too much. And yes, in the last few
years the tops, with a spigot, did wear out. A double layer of plastic wrap
held by a rubber band has effectively sealed them when they are taken to a
fish show in their third decade.
The three gallon containers aren't as space efficient as the fives. But they
certainly carry easier. They can be stored under the fish racks more easily.
