RE: Lighting

I have a planted 55 that I use a 4 foot shop light on with 2 GE sunshine
bulbs, or 40W chroma50's as they are also known. These bulbs are about 5 or
6 bucks at Lowe's or Home Depot. Doesn't get much more economical than that
for full spectrum bulbs. Phillips also sells a great full spectrum bulb for
cheap but I don't know the name of it since I don't use it. IF anyone
doubts the bulbs I'm using, I'll post it to the ofoto.com addy I'm using
right now so you can tell me what you think of it. I'll post it this
evening.

Wright says he uses two different bulbs. I was using a 50/50 bulb and a GE
Sunshine bulb in the fixture, which made the fish look much better but the
plants started to slow their growth. They still grew though. I replaced
the 50/50 bulb with another GE Sunshine bulb and the plants started bursting
out again with new growth. The 50/50 I used was a coral life.

While we are on the subject. Before I got into killifish I was a Rift Lake
Cichlid breeder. I wanted a bulb that would bring out the incredible color
these fish had, but couldn't afford all those super expensive bulbs out
there. So, I went down and talked to my friendly local LFS guy and he said
that when his Coralife bulbs lost what they needed for the live rock and
inverts in his salt tanks he sold them used. I had no corals in my Malawi
and Tanganyikan tanks so I didn't need that part of the spectrum for my
purposes. The 4 ft bulbs he sold me where pure actinic blue and 50/50 and I
got them for between 5 and 8 bucks. The fish lit up like the aurora
borealis and I was happy. It is a thought worth investigating for those
like me who are trying to squeeze every penny these days.

I'll re-post the ofoto.com addy after I paste up the 55 planted tank photos.
