Re: OT Don't read if you're too upset. Re: R: What's Happen
I have to respond to Barry's message. If anybody wishes to respond,
please do it privately- not on the list. My address is
sifumoylan at adelphia_net.
I am very saddened by the loss of Doug. I hope the list will have
him back after a reasonable cooling off period. I hope he will want to come
back. He is a killie keeper.
I am now going to make my very last remark (I know I said that
before, but Barry's message and Doug's unsubscription changes the situation
enough that I feel I have to speak) on this subject.
First of all, Doug's message has been horribly misinterpreted by
most readers. In no way was he justifying terrorism! He is perfectly
within his rights as a citizen to express his view that Israeli policies
toward the Palestinians are misguided and incite terrorism. He is also
within his rights to express his opinion about not liking the idea of a
violent US response and the possible long-term ramifications that may
follow. I happen to agree on the first part, and disagree on the other.
Just like those who flamed him, he typed quickly while under emotional
duress while watching news of this horrific terrorist attack. So did I.
Rereading my message, I felt I could have expressed myself better too.
Maybe I am wrong about how I read Doug's message, and the flamers were
right. It really doesn't matter regarding the point I want to make. I have
witnessed a strong tendency by many list members, whether the subject is
killies or not, to be very intolerant of other views and interests. We do
not have to agree all the time. List members don't EVER have to agree.
But, I think we should remember that free speech is supposed to be a
fundamental right. An unalienable right. In this time of national crisis,
of great emotion and concern, I think we should be extra careful about
protecting rights. It is our freedom that is under attack by people who do
not believe in it. Freedom of speech, quite pointedly and deliberately,
includes speech with which we disagree or even find offensive. Certainly,
cursing and name-calling are not constructive forms of argumentation or
criticism. In school, I teach students to attack the IDEA- never the person
expressing it. I think it's an instructive concept.
You may now fire away- but please do it off-list.

that this list, in its own small way, can help provide an outlet, but I
would appeal to all of you not to use the list to express hate. I received a
notification message yesterday that Doug had unsubscribed from the list. I
think that was probably a wise move. Let's concentrate on the healing
process.
