RE: saltwater killies (rubrifrons)

Hi Bruce,

Is it from fresh or brackish water like most other Fun. species. I have had
salt in with mine and decided to remove the salt with the last water change.
Now I am thinking about it again in light of my experience with other Fun.

I absolutely agree about hardy. I tried amquel in a new tank for the first
time and for some reason the bacteria culture grafts failed 3 times. The
ammonia was high enough to kill java moss but the F. rubrifrons were doing
fine. Now that's hardy! But if they are truly brackish I know they wont like
fresh water for too long.

I saw these fish at the AKA convention and now have them courtesy or some
fine people in AZ. I plan to start breeding them in a week or two.

Most people who have never seen these fish do not appreciate them. But when
you get a close look at them you see that they are up there with most
imports. And nicer than many.

Its amazing how we can ignore those fish which we have in our own back yard.
I used to keep sunfish in a 55 gal tank and they attracted a lot of
attention. Then I came across a Bass and he came across the sunfish. Then I
wound up with an even larger bass, which believe it or not choked itself to
death eating a native shiner. But some sunfish are just as nice as some
discus and nicer than many common cichlids. But how often do you see them in
a fish room.

Best regards,

~RJ~

_Fundulus rubrifrons_ is found in north-central, north-eastern and central
Florida about as far south as the Tamiami Trail if I remember correctly (and
north maybe into southernmost Georgia?). It is a strangely neglected species
given its physical attractiveness and general hardiness.
