RE: A. Australe Group Spawn?

This is a good idea. I keep my australes in a planted, show-type tank and
never thought to use mops in it. Although I don't like the idea of
ruining the appearance, it is a great way to introduce diversity from
random chance rather than trying to avoid picking the same pairs over
and over again for separate breeding. I am going to have to try it.

I am group spawning right now. I have picked an average of 10 eggs a day for
the past 2 weeks. Use 2 mops at the Bottom of the tank (very important). If
you like live plants I only use the top floating kinds like fox tail and
hornwort. Don't use to much as it might entice them to breed in it. Although
I haven't seen it yet.

Feed at least twice a day. This should stop the eating of any eggs and keep
the egg laying production. Pick eggs early in the morning. This prevents the
disturbing of eggs not yet hardened. They love to breed in the first light
of day or when your timers kick on :) If you take out the mops at any other
time let them sit in some tank water for at east an hour or two.

The size of the tank really doesn't seem to matter. I am using a 2 1/2 with
four fish. I am sure I could fit at least 2 - 3 more fish too. Hope this
helps.

P.S. I received most of this information from a friend at the meeting at
Dave Franco's house in Rochester. He recommended a twenty or so gallon tank,
many pairs of A. Australe, and a bunch (literally) of yarn (boiled of course
to release all that nasty stuff). He said toss in the yarn and once a day
remove the yarn and replace with a new bunch. The collected yarn should be
placed into another setup tank. Myself I let my girl pick the eggs, she
really enjoys that part of the hobby. Good luck. Oh yeah they really like
water changes. I usually get a better collection of eggs after a water
change of about 50%.
