I can't offer a solution for the metal frame tanks. I haven't had any for years. However, to allow entry of airlines etc, I use the plastic strip that comes with tank tops from All Glass and other manufactuers. I simply bought my tops, which I know many regard as too expensive a solution. However, I do believe that you can buy the plastic strip through your LFS. I know you can buy the plastic hinge material. You will probably have to get them to order it. Because the strip has a groove that slips over the back of the glass top, it does not warp.
