RE:price
Something that hobbyists miss, but that aquarium storeowners never miss, is
that one of the main concerns is "how much room will this fish take up?" It
is like room and board and the fish must pay for it!! I started doing
killies cause here in Tampa Bay, the leader in fish farms in the USA (CONUS)
with roughly over 250 fish farms in the area, tank space is at a premium,
and, in addition to being readily available from fish farm ponds here,
cichlids require just too much space. I was a rift lake cichlid nut and
studied them and their environment for quite a few years before even moving
here to Tampa 4 years ago.
Back to the storeowner. The only fish I know of that has held its value as
a bread and butter fish, though getting quite large is the Oscar. Most
other "Bread and Butter" fish are barbs and tetras and such. (I left a lot
of small fish out here.)
Killifish take up very little room. They eat just about anything, the hardy
gardneri's at least, and, for the most part, they can tolerate harsh tank
conditions. ( you all can say what you want here, but I have a friend who
does his water changes once a month and has no filtration on his 2.5 gallon
tanks. ) Remember, we are talking " keeping " here, not breeding, when it
comes to LFS sales. Local fish stores live off of peripheral sales, and
also, people who kill a lot of nice fish. Sad but that is business, and has
nothing to do with the quality of the pet store/fish store, most of the
time.
Just a little light on the subject of fish stores and you can use this
information for your benefit. Let the fish storeowner know that these fish
take very little tank space, and show them how beautiful they are. You will
probably have a customer for life!!
