FW: KillieTalk Digest V3 #1529

I've never tried the pitchfork method but I heard that worm harvesters use a
similar method on the Florida panhandle. In the Appalachicola national
forest they sell permits to a limited number of people. These people then
go out with wooden posts that they drive into the ground. They then hammer
them and huge numbers of earthworms come up. The story I heard said that
the worms were most plentiful in Long Leaf Pine woodlands that had recently
been burned and avoided areas with oak trees. Not all post and hammering
implements were equally useful and the best ones were used year after year
and were even passed on from father to son. I quess there's a certain tone
that really works well. Certain times of the year work better than others
and the season only lasts a month or two. These worms were the huge species
of nightcrawler that are popular for fishing in the southeast, and each
person would make a substantial portion of his income from this. I've never
tried this method for getting worms for my fish since I find it's easier to
just go to the bait store and purchase a container of them for $2. That
amount usually lasts me two months.

I heard a tale once of an old Indian fisherman who tried this pitchfork
thing. Apparently he disturbed all of the moles, ground hogs, prairie dogs
and snakes which lived for miles around. The moles groundhogs and prairie
dogs surfaced and began attacking anything they could find. Luckily before
everyone was killed by the moles the ground hogs, etc. the snakes ate most
of them saving the people. In celebration the Indians performed the first
snake dance. To prevent any other fisherman from ever doing this again the
Indians drained all of the bodies of water in the region. This is of course
how the great American deserts were first created. If you have any doubts,
you can still see the deserts in the US South West and some Indians still
perform the snake dance.

Amazing how much history and otherwise useful information you can learn on
this killie list, Isn't it?

Best regards,

I was thinking it was easier just to spend 2 dollars and get the container
from the local fish shop and freeze them. : )

Aww....Why not try some old voodoo magic and stick a pitch fork in the
ground? I've seen it done and the effects are astonishing. First the worms
come crawling out of the ground screaming, and any neighbors within the
resonance field become zombie like for about an hour. Really neat trick!
