Re: Water Incubation Question

Tom

The only way to really answer this is-
When the fry can fit in a larger ones mouth thats when
it becomes an issue. Some are more cannabalistic than
others.
For example, I have Ep. grahmi that I got at the
convention that have fry of all sizes swimming with
the parents. I haven't noticed any predation. I have
Ep. chaperi that will eat anything that will fit in
their mouths. I now have Fp. oeseri swimming with
their fry and I have A. riggenbachi that I have
actually seen eat new hatchlings and have had a
mysterious disappearence of the fry of smaller size
when I have seperated them. Most other
chromaphyosemions don't seem to be cannabalistic. I
have J. floridae with fry of all sizes and Fp. cauveti
without fry. The cauveti fry will prey on the smaller
fry. Available hiding places are critical with these
fish. Most of the GAR that I have kept I have sorted
by sized. In my experience, larger GAR fry will eat
smaller fry no matter how well fed they are.

As with most killies there is no standard rule that
can be applied. Variables such as food supply, tank
size/population, available light, water cleanliness,
etc. may also be applicable.

YMMV of course.
