RE: heaters (was: Hard water)
Hi Catherine,
Visitherms do a very good job but I do keep thermometers in each tank. It is
not until you get to those small 2.5, 3, 5, 5.5 and 10 gal tanks which
proliferate so quickly that you appreciate the less expensive low wattage
non-submersible Supreme or Second Nature heaters at $7 to $10 each. They are
also easy to sterilize between fish. Just wipe them down with bleach. Just
watch out for those sub-size heaters they are very inaccurate as there is no
room between the heating coil and the thermostat and stay away from the high
wattage models. If the heater uses the same thermostat for their 25 watt
model and their 250 watt model you know the 25 watt model is over engineered
by a factor of up to 10 times. But the 250 watt is either under rated or at
the barest minimum specification.
Best regards,
~RJ~

Subject: RE: heaters (was: Hard water)
Hi RJ--
Thanks for the info. I'm learning more about heaters than I realized.
Typically, I use Visitherms (50 and 100 watt models) in my tanks (10 and
20 gallons). I find that the extra expense for a submersible heater is
worth is since I can drop the water level in the tanks to help contain
"jumpy" species, and that the cat and kid can't get at it to mess with
the settings. I also kind of like the fact that the scale is printed on
the heater, so I can see what temperature I'm adjusting it too, and they
are reasonably accurate.
I've tried cheaper heaters in the last 5 years or so, and I haven't been
terribly impressed with their initial quality or longevity. However, I
will have to take a look at them again in light of this discussion. Of
course, heaters will be mostly a moot point once the fish room is done
(this fall I think), since I will keep that room warmer than the rest of
the house....
Now, if I could just find a cheap way to keep all the ponds a toasty 70
F over our cold Ohio winters....
Catherine
