I would be quick to separate the idea that pH and hardness are related,
though most of the time they go hand in hand. Usually people want hardness
in their water to be able to maintain a high or certain consistent pH. I
would either buy one of the nice Hanna TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) meters
that people were getting not to long ago on promotion for about 15 bucks, or
get a conductivity meter that usually measure things in Micro-siemens (sp?)
or uS. As a rule of thumb but not exact, TDS = 1/2 conductivity or 1/2
whatever the uS are. (i.e. 600 uS (conductivity) = 300 ppm (TDS).)
