RE: heaters (was: Hard water)
Hi Catherine,
I am not sure that the rule applies. You can get very good low wattage
heaters for fresh water use for under $10.00. Just look carefully at the
design. There is no rocket science involved.
The following are the criteria:
Wattage/current - the higher the current the better the contacts and other
components must be.
Size/insulation - the larger the better, the more room or insulation between
the heating elements and the thermostat the better.
Component rating - The higher the rating on the noise suppression components
the longer they are likely to last.
If you are using large wattage heaters in salt water applications you are
most likely right about staying with the high end submersible products. I
heat about 20 tanks and areas in my house goes down to about 50 degrees or
less in the winter and although it would be nice to have all top of the line
heaters I found it unnecessary. And believe me my heaters work very hard.
Heaters which are underrated or are inferior fail quickly around here.
Best regards,
~RJ~

That's what I meant. Thanks for saying it more clearly. I have had cheap
heaters that were reliable, but have found (maybe it's just dumb luck)
that with heaters at least you seem to get what you pay for. You save
money in the long run if you buy good quality in the first place, even
if it costs more initially. My Whisper pumps are a case in point: still
going strong after 15 or 20 years of service (with routine repairs along
the way), though they were expensive (at least for a kid) when I bought
them.
