RE: heaters (was: Hard water)
I also will not go into names for the time being. But most heaters use the
same thermostat regardless of the wattage. So for low wattage applications
just about all heaters are over-rated. When you get to high wattage
applications some will arc-weld due to the increased current. So the best
rule of thumb is to see what the highest wattage the heater can go to is and
then buy one which is substantially less than that. Also the further the
heating coils are from the thermostat or the better isolated the thermostat
is from the heating element the more accurate it is likely to be.
Submersible heaters are unnecessary in fresh water and they all rely on
seals which will eventually leak. They are also impossible to repair. And
more difficult to sterilize.
Best regards,

So true but...
The most expensive, top of the range heaters I own
(can't mention names, don't want to get sued...) is the
most unreliable heater I have ever owned! The best was a
simple, cheap heater made locally that is 10+ years old
and going strong. I've also found the new Regent heaters
good value for money (I work at a pet store over the
weekend and of the 100s we have sold I don't know of 1
return, as opposed to the many returns of the top-of-the-
range heaters we sell).
