RE: Hard water

Excellent advice.Last year added several Oak leaves to a breeders 5 gallon tank.
The water here is moderately soft, the pH crashed so suddenly that it killed the male
half of the breeder pair overnight.

Toxic stuff in peat is probably less of a concern than toxic stuff in any neutral regulator out of a bottle.  The one cardinal rule though is to do you chemistry outside of the tank.  Picking up a good sized rubber maid tub can be great for this.  Add the peat and water to that, and then use the water (mixed with tap water if need be) for water changes.  That way your fish don't have to suffer if you add too much of something and the pH bounces to 8.5 or 4.1 or something wild like that.  If you let things get stable and then add them, the fish don't have to take the brunt of any miscalculations.  Just my two cents, but good ones, I think.

My one tank is very high, at lease 7.4 or more. i have added alot of netural
regulator but can't get it to 7. Any suggestions on causes or cures? I'm
afraid to try the peat thing out of fear that there is something toxic in it
for fish.
