Vibrator Air Pumps
Hi Paul,
When I rebuild an air pump I disassemble it completely and clean every part
I do not replace. Make sure that you do not cross thread the screws. I align
the swing arm half way between the polls of the transformer or as close as
possible, this gives you maximum throw.
But none of this will reduce the noise much. I have rebuilt cheap air pumps
and top of the line ones. The biggest difference in the design is in how
well they reduce the sound. The Whisper Supra 4 for example has an intake
manifold, internal chassis with its own suspension and rubber feet. it uses
horizontally opposed billows to reduce/counteract vibration. This was a very
quiet pump and ran for about $85.00. A Penplax XP 440 twin sold for about
$8.00 and has no such sound suppression technology. And you can hear one in
the next room.
If you are running the pumps in your basement the Penplax is not bad. I have
one running there, but in my office I have a Whisper 800 which you can not
hear at all.
As far as reducing the noise goes I have put the pumps on old pieces of
thick pile carpeting or foam rubber. But it will not help very much as they
all already have rubber feet.
It is not too hard to find old Whisper pumps, many people do not rebuild
them and sell the carcasses at local killie clubs for a buck or two. Rebuild
Kits sell for $5.00 to $19.00 depending on which pump you are rebuilding.
Do not pay too much for a carcass, some of them have been flooded and can
not be economically rebuilt. If you can plug them in make sure they hum. It
does not matter if they put out any air. The rebuild will take care of that.
I have seen that Hagen is putting out a well priced product. But I have not
yet heard one.
Best regards,
~RJ~

RJ,
When you take a pump apart to fix it and to make it more quiet,
what do you add or take away from the pump? I have a couple of
pumps that still work, but they are loud. Can I make them more
quiet? Would you be giving away your secrets? If you don't want
to, I can understand,
Bro. Paul
