RE: incubation times.
Hi Guy,
I hatch my RAC DKG and Beira 98 after 8 months regardless of when they eye
up. I know of several methods to accelerate hatches. But I will not discuss
them on list. One of the practices has the fish eye up in water and then
puts them into peat for a time before hatching.
By very carefully tweaking moisture, temperature, etc. you can really rush a
hatch in a big way. But if you screw up by a few days or degrees you will
get sliders or dead fish. The people who have succeeded have some very
sophisticated set ups and dedicate a great deal of time to their procedures.
I, for one, can't see the reason to bother.
Except for a few commercial breeders there is no real need for the rest of
us to rush Nothos. When I first started with these fish, I also tried to
rush them and wound up with belly sliders. I just hatched a batch of RAC
after 10 months and most of them are fine. Some of the eggs were not even
eyed up yet so I could have gone longer.
I have communicated with Marc. And I am most certain that he did not intend
to provide short cuts on cutting Notho hatching times. As a matter of fact
Marc is working on prolonging diapause so that eggs can be stored longer.
Without very special conditions there is no way that RAC can hatch and
develop normally after six weeks despite the fact that they are eyed up.
Best regards,
~RJ~

Hi all,
just to emphasize the point I checked some RAC Moz 99/3 and was surprised
to find them eyed up at six weeks. This leads me onto a question. The fish
hatched but unfortunately were belly sliders - not the worse cases I have
had but they did not survive. I was interested to read Marc Bellemans
article where he
proposes that eggs will only up in aerobic conditions, remaining in Diapause
I in anaerobic conditions. Eggs that eye up but are not wet then begin to
burn up energy
resulting in belly sliders.
If this supposition is correct it behoves us to check eggs frequently (more
than I have tended to do) in order to avoid sliders. How do people feel
about this
idea? Does this tie in with other peoples experience? One thing that occurs
to me is that it is unlikely that any of us store eggs in anaerobic
conditions so what would
account for the long incubation timess for some fish that have historically
been quoted. I'd love to hear some points of view 'cos I'm getting seriously
hacked off with
the number of sliders I'm getting at the moment.
Cheers,
Guy
