RE: AIR PUMPS
The major difference between cheap air pumps and the more expensive ones is
the amount of noise they make. Whispers are rare new, they are best found
used and then rebuilt. If you are buying new look into tetra DW series
pumps, they seem reasonably quiet. Speak to the store and check out their
return policy try them until you find one you can live with.
Prices of home brew tanks are usually low. New 2.5 gal tanks sell for under
$10.00 around here and they make covers which fit them. 10 Gal tanks usually
go for around $8.00. Unless your tanks have covers, lights or other special
qualities $5.00 each would be about reasonable.
Best regards,
~RJ~

Thanks RJ,
Two weeks ago I built a nursery for my fry. Since wood is very
expensive here, I only built a wooden frame and put 3/4 inch
styrofoam around it and over this, I put a plastic sheeting. My front
door of this thing is made from styrofoam with plastic sheeting
around it. I thought my $6. pump would be quiet behind all this,
but it wasn't. I have ringing in the ears for some time now and the
hum didn't help it. I wanted to hatch my bbs in the nursery giving a
gentle flow of air around the nursery. I put a heater in a two liter
container of sand - heat for the winter months - I don't like sleeping
in a warm room in winter - and the fry seem to grow better in a
warmer climate.
The next time I'm in the store I'll check the whisper pumps out.
Thanks.
And now I can use my air conditioning unit without bothering the
fry. I often wondered how killie keepers heated such small
containers of fry, and now I know. This whole thing cost me about
50 dollars, but a couple of Sundays ago I sold that amount of killies
in Cincinnati, so I'm ok.
Right now I have about 1000 fry in a number of sizes. When they
get too big for the nursery, I put them into plastic shoe boxes.
I'm thinking of cutting back on some of my aquariums this year.
I made about 15 - 3gallon aquariums a couple of years ago. I'm
thinking of selling 7 of them this month to our new university
students who will be coming here in a couple of weeks for school.
What do you think would be a fair price? They are very clean and
clear except for a water line that I can't get out. I even thought of
including a pair of killies with each one.
I would appreciate your imput,
Bro. Paul
