Hi Ron,

There are no mites in synthetic culture. If you are running an experiment do
not stop on my behalf but the worms need to remain moist so I imagine that
you are keeping them in wet oatmeal or tater flakes. If they do not drown as
the media becomes more liquid, they will eventually pollute the culture with
ammonia. The culture will crash. Worms will die off suddenly. I also see
where they can be hard to harvest. On the other hand it might work if you
control the moisture very carefully.

Synthetic culture can be attacked by fungus and black midges. As for fungus
you can rinse the media or even sterilize it if necessary. As far as midges
go you need to keep the culture in sealed plastic bags or containers which
prevent the bugs from getting in.

In synthetic culturing there is the water bath which provides moisture for
the worms in terms of high humidity. It can be changed weekly and the
ammonia is overall gone. The media can be rinsed and is cleaned. And the
food is left on top so that it is eaten by the worms and can be easily
removed if it spoils. The worms also come up to eat the food where they can
be rinsed off into a collecting tray and then fed to the fish without any
effort.

The problem is that spongy foam is too dense to properly clean and allows
limited passages for the worms. It also seems to trap the ammonia thereby
limiting the worm production. By the way once the sponges get full of
decaying worms and waste and an odorous bacteria or fungus culture sets in
which you can't rinse out you will get a real appreciation for the words
"smells like rotting flesh".

I will try to get some time to write up my method as soon as I can.

Best regards,

~RJ~

RJ, thanks for the maths. I'll bear that in mind. Do you experience
such 'mites infestation' with your "synthetic foam method" previously
mentioned (I'm trying frantically to steer you back in finishing up that
article.... I'm REALLY REALLY interested!).

As an aside has anyone tried using potato flakes or stiffly mixed
oatmeal as a media for grindals? I'm working on that .... it's clean,
no mite eggs, no acidic media (not yet anyway) and easily prepared. Any
cons that I might have overlooked?
