"Amquel" is a product distributed by Kordon
http://www.petsforum.com/novalek/kpds.htm , originally patented and made by
John F. Kuhns.
"Prime" and "Ammo Lock 2" are similar compounds. They neutralize chlorine
but also bind up ammonia from any source. That means they are useful for
treating chloramine, which is used nearly everywhere in the US as a safer,
longer-lasting antibacterial than plain chlorine.
They also are useful for preventing ammonia burns from the fish feces
released during shipment. No fish should ever be shipped without a day or
two of starvation, but they still produce a little ammonia because they find
stuff to eat, anyway, or their gut otherwise is not completely purged.
These products also tend to kill invertibrates and many bacteria, so should
be used with some caution. I don't like them around fry tanks and the Java
moss that supports the infusoria they need, for example. They are deadly to
Daphnia cultures, too. You may *think* your tank is cycled, but ???
