David,

I noticed this as well.  I am not sure what problems the exposed 
lead would cause, however I just used some aquarium sealant to 
seal in the lead.  If you remove the air diffusing chamber, and have 
a long nozzle for the sealant, it is a very easy process.  As far as I 
can tell, this did not effect the filtration.  At the very least, it made 
me feel better.
