Re: Flightless Fruit Flies
I raise tons of flightless fruit flys, mostly for my frogs but the killies
also love them. Your vial could very well product that many. The green
stuff in the bottom is the culture media. You can make your own from
bannanas etc but I've never done that. It's much simpler to purchase the
dried media and just add water. Some media have a substance that turns blue
or green when it's wet, which allows you to see if all the media has been
thoroughly wetted but it's not necessary. As soon as you have enough flies
in the culture the first thing you should do is start one or two more
cultures to ensure a future supply. I picked up a good tip from Ken
Normandin. I use to raise FFF in glass jars which I would sterilize before
re-using. He came up with the great idea of using empty plastic soda
bottles. Just put a little filter floss in the neck of the bottle. Once
the culture is spent, just toss the old culture into the recyle bin. (I
always wonder what they think at the recyling plant.) I don't know if the
culture medium is bad for killies. I've never had any fall into their tanks
but the frogs don't mind. The cheapest source of media I've found is Blue
Spruce Biological in Castle Rock, Co. but there are probably cheaper sources
out their. I didn't have much success with the stuff I got from LFS
cultures even though in general they are an excellent source of starter
cultures. Hope that helps.

Subject: Flightless Fruit Flies
I just bought this flightless fruit flies inside a
small taller than wider round container with some
green stuff inside. The direction for breeding says it
will produce about 1000 fruit flies in about 3 weeks
if kept about 75-83 temperature! Does anybody know
about this? I sure don't but I thought I'd try it for
my killies. Is the green stuff bad for the fish?
